South Side Home Movie Project

What do you collect?
We collect 8mm, Super-8 and 16mm reel-to-reel film.

Do you collect video?
Unfortunately, we do not have the capacity to collect video at this time. We recommend contacting Media Burn to get your home videos transferred to digital formats.

Can I stream the videos on my phone?
Currently, video streaming works best on computers or on Android-based mobile devices. Some of the videos do not stream on devices running iOS.

What kind of comments are you looking for?
If you see a location or person you recognize please tell us using the comment function on our digital archive!

Do you collect 35mm slides?
We are not currently collecting 35mm slides that are not a part of a home movie collection, but you can contact Northeast Document Conversation Center or Central Camera to get your slides digitized.

What do the titles in brackets mean?
Titles in brackets are titles we assigned to a film when there was no other identifying information on a reel or can.

What is the year range of your collection?
We have films from as early as 1929 all the way up to 1982.

How many films are in your collection?
We have about 200 films in our collection and we’re growing every day!

How do I get my home movies digitized?
Contact our archivist! We’ll ask you a few questions about the kind of films you have, and make arrangements for you to drop them off. We provide free inspection, repair and digitization of your films and give you a digital copy. We can also provide information about contributing the originals to our archive, to be stored in a climate-controlled vault.

How do I contribute my home movies to the archive?
Contact our archivist! Every home movie donation is unique, and we give each collection our personal care and attention. We’ll share details about the preservation of your films, information about what will happen to the materials, and a timeline for when you can expect to see the digital versions.

What neighborhoods do you cover?
Everyone who considers themselves South Siders are welcome to contribute. We know that sometimes the films document life in other cities and countries, but as long as you’re a South Sider we want your home movies!
