This mix of South Side Home Movie Project film clips paired with 60s soul cuts was inspired by scenes of inter-generational gatherings - Grandma clapping alongside young couples and kids, folks trying out the latest dances, birthday cakes. “We’ve had to put a lot of these sorts of gatherings on pause, but these celebratory moments mean so much to people. I wanted to honor that. My muse was the basement parties that so many of us grew up with.”
Contreras will join a live post-show conversation with viewers.
Called "site/seeing," the 2-day conference will consider the many
different sites of cinema: from home movies projected on living room
walls, to vaudeville recordings shown in prisons, to Black westerns
screened in segregated theaters. Join us for a series of screenings,
panel presentations and discussions that celebrate the growing
scholarship that seeks to create a more kaleidoscopic view of where
cinema can be found and who its spectators are.
The entire conference is free and open to the public. Details and registration: https://www.sitesofspectatorship.com/
